Comunicado En el cierre de Manifesta 8, Faculty of Invisibility ha escrito una serie de cartas que ha enviado a las instituciones que han estado relacionadas con Manifesta 8 tanto de forma local como internacional. El listado de destinatarios se ha elaborado a partir de las instituciones participantes que aparecen en la web de la Fundación Manifesta. Estas instituciones son: la Consejería de Cultura y Turismo de la Comunidad Autónoma de la Región de Murcia, el Ministerio de Educación, Cultura y Ciencia de Holanda, Fonds BKVB, la Fundación Mondriaan y la Agencia Ejecutiva de la Unión Europea en el ámbito Educativo, Audiovisual y Cultural. Los empleados de la Fundación Manifesta y los miembros del equipo de Manifesta 8 en Murcia también se encuentran entre los destinatarios. Un total de ocho cartas son enviadas el mismo día y sin una fecha específica de entrega. Por lo tanto, no hay un orden definido de lectura. Faculty of Invisibility ha intentado, en lo posible, enviarlas a cada empleado de las respectivas instituciones. Al mencionar su función en la organización, estas cartas tratan de aproximarse a los destinatarios sin tener en cuenta los puestos que ocupan. Parece que la producción contemporánea de imágenes de lo público está estrechamente relacionada con la esfera institucional. Cabe destacar que las instituciones muestran un conjunto fugaz de espacios en el lenguaje, una cadena de delegaciones y responsabilidades, que se llevan a cabo en nombre de otros. Este mecanismo del lenguaje parece participar en una articulación, mientras que realmente la emite. A la misma vez estos mecanismos retirados resultan totalmente comunes y familiares. Pero este gesto concierne también a los posibles efectos de nuestros actos y articulaciones. Las ocho cartas de Faculty of Invisibility están dirigidas a la oficina, en un intento de acercarse a un límite del lenguaje que transmiten. Tienen como objetivo insinuar un momento en el que el lenguaje institucional parece ser poroso y permeable para otro gesto que se suele asignar al ámbito de la literatura. Las cartas son un guiño a los contratos que normalmente van unidos a cualquier puesto de trabajo en una institución y se preocupan por la relación entre las personas y la oficina, que los une y los separa al mismo tiempo. Y a pesar de ello, estas cartas mencionan un acto imperceptible al que pertenecen. A través de su ritmo repetitivo, aluden a los actos burocráticos, señalan una experiencia indeterminada que puede aparecer con ellas. Cuando se refieren a una oficina cautivada, les gustaría tensar el lazo que une a la persona a la oficina, para dejar que sólo la oficina, sin su habitante, se suelte de la correa y quede girando como un trompo. En esta obra Faculty of Invisibility hace referencia al estudio que Giorgio Agamben realiza del término "officium". Las figuras que no tienen un lugar firme en el mundo, ni contornos definitivos o inalienables, que suban o caigan, [...] que negocien sus cualidades con el enemigo o con el vecino [...] exhaustas ya al principio de un largo periodo, así como el trompo que salta de la cuerda se ha tomado prestado de Franz Kafka. En concreto, el discurso de dimisión de Michele Montas, ex portavoz del Secretario General y la respuesta de Ban Ki-Moon en las Naciones Unidas en Noviembre de 2009, han encontrado su camino en este texto. Muchas consideraciones que han aparecido en otras producciones de Faculty of Invisibility durante el último año han tenido influencia en esta serie de cartas. Maaike Engelen y Darren Rhymes entre otros han contribuido en gran medida a su elaboración. Maaike Engelen ha traducido estas cartas al holandés. Darren Rhymes ha corregido la versión inglesa. Victoria Frensel ha facilitado la traducción al español. Jenny Dusche y el equipo de Eventos Paralelos han revisado estas cartas antes de su envío. Announcement On the closure of Manifesta 8 the Faculty of Invisibility has issued a series of letters, sent to institutions which both locally as well as internationally have been associated with Manifesta 8. The list of recipients is drawn from the partner institutions Manifesta Foundation lists on its website. These institutions are Consejería de Cultura y Turismo de la Comunidad Autónoma de la Región de Murcia; Dutch Ministry of Education, Culture and Science; Fonds BKVB; Mondriaan Foundation; as well as Education, Audiovisual and Culture Executive Agency of the European Union. The employees of Manifesta Foundation itself as well as the staff members of Manifesta 8 in Murcia are amongst the addressees. All eight letters are posted on the same day without being given a specific date. Accordingly the order in which they will be read is not determined. The Faculty of Invisibility tried, wherever possible and sensible, to address each employee of the respective institution. Though naming their function within the organisation these letters attempt to approach the receivers regardless of their specific position within it. It appears that the contemporary production of images of the public is closely related to the institutional sphere. Significantly institutions expose a fleeting suite of rooms in language, a chain of delegations and responsibilities, which are carried out on behalf of others. These mechanisms of language seem to partake in withdrawing what has been said, while actually issuing it. Entirely common and familiar to us, they concern the possible effects of our own acts and articulations as well. The eight letters of the Faculty of Invisibility are directed towards the office and attempt to approach a threshold of language it conveys. They aim to hint at a moment, in which institutional language seems to be porous and permeable for another gesture, which is usually assigned to the realm of literature, to the fairy tale. The letters turn towards an agreement that accompanies any institutional employment and concerns the relation between person and office, which holds them together and apart at once. Still this series of letters mentions an imperceptible event that it correspond to. Though their repetitive rhythm alludes to bureaucratic acts, they point at an undetermined experience that may appear with them. When they speak of a spellbound office, they attempt to tighten the strap that holds the person in the office, only to let the office, void of its bearer, jump of the cord and to let it continue spinning like a top. In this work the Faculty of Invisibility refers to Giorgio Agambens examination of the term officium and those figures, Walter Benjamin says, that have no firm place in the world, nor firm, inalienable outlines, who are either rising or falling, trading its qualities with its enemy or neighbor exhausted but at the beginning of a long duration. The spinning top jumping off the cord is borrowed from Franz Kafka. In particular the resignation speech of Michele Montas, former Spokesperson of the Secretary General, and Ban Ki-Moon's response at the United Nations in November 2009 have found their way into this writing. Many considerations which emerged in other productions of the Faculty of Invisibility during the last year have influenced this series of letters. Maaike Engelen and Darren Rhymes amongst others have significantly contributed to them. Maaike Engelen translated the eight letters to Dutch, Darren Rhymes corrected the English version. Victoria Frensel facilitated the translation to Spanish. Jenny Dusche and members of the Parallel Events team were amongst those, who read the letters beforehand. Katja Gretzinger has supported the Faculty of Invisibility in designing the letters. We would like to thank all of them for their kind help. Ankündigung Zum Ende der Manifesta 8 hat die Faculty of Invisibility im Rahmen der Parallel Events eine Serie von Briefen an einige der Institutionen verschickt, die lokal oder international mit der Manifesta verbunden sind und diese vor allem finanziell unterstützen. Die Liste der Adressaten ergibt sich über die von der Manifesta offiziell genannten Partner. Im Einzelnen handelt es sich um Consejería de Cultura y Turismo de la Comunidad Autónoma de la Región de Murcia, Dutch Ministry of Education, Culture and Science, Fonds BKVB, Mondriaan Foundation sowie Education, Audiovisual and Culture Executive Agency of the European Union. Die insgesamt acht Briefe dieser Serie wurden aber auch an die Mitarbeiter der Manifesta Foundation in Amsterdam und die Mitarbeiter der Manifesta 8 in Murcia, Spanien, verschickt. Alle acht Briefe wurden zum selben Zeitpunkt aufgegeben und sind nicht näher datiert. Folglich ist die Reihenfolge, in der sie gelesen werden können, unbestimmt. Die Faculty of Invisibility hat sich bemüht, soweit möglich jedem Angestellten dieser Partner der Manifesta 8 ihre Briefserie zuzuschicken, adressiert an deren jeweilige institutionelle Position. Obwohl die Briefe die institutionelle Position ihrer Adressaten benennen, beabsichtigen sie, diejenigen, die in diesen Institutionen tätig sind, gleichermassen anzusprechen. Die zeitgenössische Herstellung von Bildern des Öffentlichen ist eng mit dem Bereich der Institution verknüpft. Exemplarisch zeigt sich in der Institution eine Flucht von Räumen der Sprache, die es erlaubt, das Gesagte im Moment seiner Artikulation schon wieder zu entziehen. Dieser Entzug des Sagbaren betrifft ebenso die mögliche Wirksamkeit des eigenen Handelns und der eigenen Artikulation. Daher versuchen die acht Briefe der Faculty of Invisibility an die Stelle des Büros zu gehen, um sich darin einer besonderen Schwelle der Sprache zuzuwenden. Die Briefe zielen auf ein Moment, in dem die Sprache der Institutionen brüchig und durchlässig für eine Geste wird, die üblicherweise dem Bereich der Literatur, dem Märchen, zugeschrieben ist. Sie bemühen sich, jenes Einverständnis in den Blick zu nehmen, das jede Tätigkeit in einer Institution begleitet und das in Form einer zusammenhaltenden Trennung zwischen Amt und Person wirksam ist. Die Briefserie der Faculty of Invisibility führt zugleich ein im Unwahrnehmbaren angesiedeltes Ereignis ein, dem sie verbunden ist. Sie greift formelhafte Wiederholungen auf, um sich in die Sprache der Institution einzulassen und zugleich auf einen von ihr ausgenommenen unbestimmten und ungewissen Bereich der Erfahrung zu verweisen. Wenn die Briefe der Faculty of Invisibility von einer Verwunschheit der ämter sprechen, dann ziehen sie das Band, das diese mit der Person zusammenhält, immer weiter auf, bis es einmal reisst und die ämter tatsächlich wie Spielfiguren davon schnurren. In ihrer aktuellen Briefarbeit bezieht sich die Faculty of Invisibility auf Giorgio Agambens Auseinandersetzung mit dem Begriff des Officiums. Sie befasst sich mit jenen Figuren, von denen Walter Benjamin sagt, dass sie keine feste Stelle, keinen festen, nicht eintauschbaren Umriss haben, die im Steigen und Fallen begriffenen Gestalten, die, eigenschaftslos, ihren Ort noch mit ihrem Feind oder Nachbarn tauschen würden. Das sich einem Kreisel gleich in der Sprache fortdrehende Amt ist einer Erzählung von Franz Kafka entlehnt. Insbesondere die Abschiedsrede der ehemaligen Pressesprecherin der Vereinten Nationen Michele Montas und die Antwort des Generalsekretärs Ban Ki-Moon vom November 2009 hat die Briefserie beeinflusst. Viele Überlegungen anderer Produktionen der Faculty of Invisibility während des vergangenen Jahres sind in diese Serie von Briefen eingeflossen. Maaike Engelen und Darren Rhymes haben an ihnen massgeblich mitgewirkt. Maaike Engelen hat die Briefe ins Niederländische übersetzt, Darren Rhymes hat die englische Fassung korrigiert. Victoria Frensel übernahm die übersetzung der Briefe ins Spanische. Jenny Dusche und das Team der Parallel Events haben die Briefe vorab gelesen. Katja Gretzinger hat uns im Entwurf der Briefe geholfen. Insbesondere möchten wir dem Parallel Events Team der Manifesta 8 danken, das diese Arbeit begleitet hat. Die Faculty of Invisibility versucht, eine Anwendung von Sprache zu entwerfen, die sich konstitutiven Momenten von Institutionen zuwendet.
